About Birger Christensen
Birger Christensen has been located at Østergade 38 since it first opened its doors in 1869. The store has been at the centre of fashion in Copenhagen for almost 150 years, constantly evolving, telling new stories each season, offering customers a modern and original retail space.
The light-filled marble-interior spans 700 square metres, with two floors of international fashion brands alongside Birger Christensen collections of fur, bags, and accessories. The business is a family affair, now in its fourth generation. In 2016, the store underwent a total refurbishment, with paintings from the Birger Christensen family’s Modernist art collection hung on the walls, and furniture by the influential Danish designer Finn Juhl.
Birger Christensen’s buyers scout the world to discover the exclusive and the new, with the aim of inspiring customers with a genuinely original mix of established brands, new products, limited editions and in-store concept boutiques, housed within a Copenhagen landmark.
Birger Christensen was established in 1869 and is today owned by Jens Birger Christensen. There was never the shadow of doubt in Jens’ mind that he would follow in the footsteps of his father, and he started out as a teenager sweeping floors in the store before studying at business school. The company has been in the family for four generations, ever since it opened in 1869 as a small fur repair workshop.
Jens’ father transformed Birger Christensen into a multi-brand retail space for luxury fashion during a fifty-year reign. Known in the fashion world for his visionary approach, Finn Birger Christensen expanded the company into an international enterprise, worn by Hollywood stars and royalty.
In 2016, Jens masterminded a top-to-toe modernisation of the store, and the same year reinvented Birger Christensen’s fur collections with the appointment of the rising-star designer Mark Tan as creative director. During Jens leadership, the store has become the shopping destination for a new generation of fashion devotees – drawn to its carefully curated selection and heritage.
